Let’s talk about something that everyone seems to call “Botox”, but spoiler alert: not all wrinkle relaxers are created equal, and Botox is actually just one brand of many.
At The Shot Shop in Enfield, CT and Longmeadow, MA, we offer several FDA-approved neurotoxins (often lovingly referred to as “wrinkle relaxers”) that all work to soften fine lines and dynamic wrinkles. While you’ll hear most people call it “Botox,” there’s a whole family of neurotoxins out there, and we’re breaking them down for you here.
First Things First: What Is a Neurotoxin?
Neurotoxins are purified proteins that temporarily relax facial muscles. These muscles contract when we smile, frown, or squint, eventually creating expression lines over time. By carefully and precisely injecting these wrinkle relaxers, we can soften the appearance of fine lines—especially in areas like the forehead, crow’s feet, frown lines (aka “11s”), and more.
All FDA-approved wrinkle relaxers work in a very similar way, but each has subtle differences in onset, spread, duration, and formulation. That’s where things get interesting.
The Most Popular Neurotoxins on the Market
1. BOTOX® Cosmetic
The OG. The brand that started it all. Botox Cosmetic has been around for over 20 years and is the household name most people use when talking about neurotoxins—kind of like how we say “Kleenex” instead of tissue. Botox is trusted and effective, with results typically lasting 3–4 months.
2. Dysport®
Dysport has a slightly thinner formulation and a faster onset, with results showing up as early as 2–3 days (vs. 5–7 for Botox). Some patients say it gives a slightly softer, more diffused look, making it great for larger treatment areas like the forehead.
3. Xeomin®
Xeomin is often called the “naked” neurotoxin. Why? It doesn’t contain any accessory proteins—just the active ingredient—making it a clean option for patients who may have built up resistance to other brands. Results are comparable to Botox and last about the same.
4. Jeuveau®
Nicknamed “Newtox,” Jeuveau is our personal favorite at The Shot Shop—and for good reason. It was specifically developed for aesthetic use and offers great precision, smooth results, and consistent outcomes. We’re proud to be a Top 10 provider in the country for Jeuveau! It’s especially loved by patients looking for a sleek, modern neurotoxin that delivers natural-looking results.
5. Daxxify®
Daxxify is the newest wrinkle relaxer on the market—and it’s making waves. This peptide-powered neurotoxin is known for its longevity, with some patients seeing results that last 6 months or longer. It’s a great option for those who want to stretch time between visits.
6. Letybo®
One of the newer entries in the U.S. market, Letybo has been used internationally for years and is gaining traction stateside. Its performance is similar to Botox in onset and duration, and while we don’t currently offer Letybo at The Shot Shop, it’s another option you might hear about.
